BFA 2002 Massachusetts College of Art - Painting and Art History, with honors and distinction
1993-1996 continuing education New England School of Art and Design, School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Massachusetts College of Art.
Elena is an expressionist painter. The overall theme of her work revolves around the circle specifically organic cyclical movements yet intertwined gestures that seek for balance in the fantastical nature towards a state of equanimity. She references nest, dream catchers, pods and flowers generally at the end of their cycle, twisted and drying trying to convey the fine line between what has been and what is being born...that narrow space between light and dark where darkness is not an abyss but a place of reflection, in doing so she plays on the edge between drawing and painting. The paintings and drawings have many transparent layers that allow the viewer's eye to travel along the lines and textures and experience the raw energy she puts in by manipulating the various materials. The work is physically moved from the wall to the floor and back again where the initial mark , a heavy charcoal line, or sweep of Sumi ink comes from the core of her body... where then she incorporates some rubbing, scraping and pasting that bring change to the form.
She does not approach the canvas with a preconceived idea. She observes then feels then lets her arm move across the surface referring to that which inspires often going beyond the plane and the object that is being observed. When color is used it often referes to the object only to change. The story lies among the layers. The images do not want to be shaped to do so would be finite. They remain on the edge, in flux. The ultimate image is not a representation but mere contemplation into a moment of her world which she believes in universal.
Elena was born in Lima Peru and has spent a considerable amount of years in Cape Town South Africa, and around the USA. Elena recently moved from her long time home in Boston, MA to Dallas, TX.
